With Dr. Michele Carbone as the director of the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii (CRCH), cutting edge research on the pathogenesis of mesothelioma is a key area of study and focus.  CRCH is a research unit of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the University’s main campus.  The National Cancer Institute designated the CRCH as a cancer center in 1996 enabling it to further its mission “to reduce the burden of cancer through research, education, and service with an emphasis on the unique ethnic, cultural, and environmental characteristics of Hawaii and the Pacific.”

Dr. Carbone has a vision for CRCH as a collaborative research center which will bring together experts from a variety of fields, including laboratory researchers, community physicians, and researchers from other institutions.  Dr. Carbone believes that this collaborative approach offers the best hope in the quest to find better treatments and eventually a cure for cancers like malignant mesothelioma.

Some programs available through CRCH include the Epidemiology Program, Natural Products and Cancer Biology Program, Prevention and Control Program as well as the newest program called the Thoracic Oncology Program.  The research in the Thoracic Oncology Program focuses on the study of mesothelioma and lung carcinogenesis to understand how mesothelioma cells proliferate so that their growth can be contained.

Mesothelioma Research

The goal of this research is to develop new and better therapies and to improve treatment outcomes for mesothelioma patients.  One example of this kind of research is that of Dr. Giovanni Gaudino, a molecular biologist from Italy and a visiting researcher at CRCH.  Dr. Gaudino is studying the efficacy of the combination of Gleevec and Gemcitabine in treating mesothelioma patients.

As we enter the new decade, exciting new developments in cancer research lie ahead for CRCH under the leadership of renowned mesothelioma researcher Dr. Michele Carbone.
