Jobsites
Asbestos and asbestos-containing products were used in many industries at various jobsites across the country. Asbestos could be present at the jobsite as a manufacturing ingredient, in machinery and equipment that needed to be repaired and maintained or in the buildings and infrastructure itself.
Clearly, jobsites that handled or worked with raw asbestos fibers such as asbestos mines, mills and factories had high occupational exposures. However, many other places such as U.S. Navy bases and ships, shipyards, power plants, refineries, foundries and construction sites also had very high levels of asbestos exposure.
Asbestos at some jobsites like hospitals, schools, farms, laboratories, jewelers, food processing plants, etc. may not be obvious or apparent at first, but can be identified upon closer investigation. All these workers and the people they came in contact with have potential occupational exposure, bystander exposure, or take home exposure to asbestos and may be at risk of developing an asbestos-related disease.
